Michelle Blades is a Panamanian-born Miami raised multi-instrumentalist currently residing in France. Experimenting with genres throughout the years ranging from orchestral folk, noisy fun punk, bedroom experimental synth-pop and garage psych. Blades' latest release with Bagnolet based Midnight Special Records is the album ATARAXIA: a marriage of all her sonic voyages. Electric guitar in hand, the album is by far Blades' most ambitious composition to date, mixing sounds familiar to her olden days in folk with the salsa rhythms in her bloodline and some newer, noisier experimentation paired lyrical themes that fluctuate as much as the dynamics themselves. Blades' album titles have always resembled the music itself-- Oh, Nostalgia (2009) being the product of a move from Miami to Arizona at the age of 18, Mariana the exploration of the self in relation to the exploration of the deepest depths of our world's oceans, Songs from Another's Bed literally an album of songs composed while homeless and on the road. ATARAXIA can only bring us the mature cumulation of such expressed ideas, the title translating from Greek into "calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet", or in Blades' case, a musical adaptation of an attempt at such a state as a young immigrant in her new-found home of France crafted into a clever cocktail between autobiography and myth.
